Most of us have been there: a drink or two to calm our nerves before a big this or that. Even rock stars get the jitters from time to time, believe it or not. But there’s a line between combating stage fright and getting so hammered that you forget the words to your biggest song once you’re onstage. It’s a line that should never be crossed. Unfortunately, these 15 Rock Stars Drunk on Stage didn’t get the memo.

KISS
There are plenty of rock ‘n’ roll moments in a Kiss show where the cold gin can kick in and take the performance to the next level. During the big ballad ‘Beth’ isn’t one of them. It’s the one time each night where Peter Criss got to step away from his drums and to the front of the stage. At this 1979 show, he forgot the words to his one big spotlight-hogging song, lost in a hazy shade of booze.

OZZY OSBOURNE
We’re not exactly sure of this clip’s origin. It’s not like you can ask: “Remember that time Ozzy Osbourne was drunk onstage?” and get a definitive answer. From what we can gather, Osbourne was performing the Black Sabbath classic ‘War Pigs’ in Cincinnati (probably in the ’00s) when a drunken fan joined him. Together, they finish the song, even though the vocals are a bit shaky… Ozzy’s, of course.

THE ROLLING STONES
This clip most likely comes from the Stones’ 2002-03 tour in support of their ‘Forty Licks’ compilation. Most of the action takes place during the first 10 seconds, before the music even starts. As Mick Jagger rattles off a bunch of city names, Ronnie Wood literally stumbles into frame, barely catching himself before peering into the crowd like a totally wasted deer trapped in the oncoming headlights.

VAN HALEN (EDDIE VAN HALEN)
During the last night of Van Halen’s 2004 reunion tour with Sammy Hagar – which the Red Rocker called “some of the most miserable, back-stabbing dark crap I’ve ever been involved with” – a super-drunk Eddie Van Halen smashed his guitar onstage. His whacked-out hairdo was usually a sign that things would soon derail, as they eventually did in Tucson on this fateful night.

THE WHO
Before the Who played a show at California’s Cow Palace on Nov. 20, 1973, Keith Moon took a staggering amount of animal tranquilizers. (Why? Because he’s Keith “Fucking” Moon.) He actually made it through 70 minutes of the set, but near the epic end of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again,’ the drums just stop. Moon passed out and had to be carried offstage. A fan, handpicked by Pete Townshend, filled in for the rest of the show.

Alcohol and rock ‘n’ roll have had a long and complicated relationship with each other. For the most part, rock musicians have found a manageable balance between partying with the bottle and their duties as live performers. But it doesn’t always work out that way.

Whether it’s the tedious nature of waiting around all day on tour, or just their inner demons taking the driver’s seat, some rock stars have go on stage and wasted everyone’s time involved with a blinding drunk performance. Today, Diffuser.fm is taking a look back at five of the best/worst examples of this.

OASIS
Liam Gallagher is a rock journalist’s dream. Not only does the former Oasis, current Beady Eye frontman drop one controversial quote after the other during interviews, he’s also one of the most unpredictable live performers, sometimes showing up to concerts three sheets to the wind, while still delivering the goods. But this drunken display during a 1997 headlining Oasis show in France is just an embarrassment for everyone involved, not to mention a rip-off to the band’s fans.

PETE DOHERTY
Former Libertines, current Babyshambles singer/guitarist Pete Doherty is as famous for his drugged-out on and off stage antics nearly as much as he is for his music. Throughout the years, the 34-year-old has admitted to abusing crack cocaine, ketamine and heroin, among other illegal substances, making the fact that he’s alive a miracle of sorts. That makes this drunken solo performance from 2009 as surprising as snow in Vermont during December.

VAN HALEN (DAVID LEE ROTH)
David Lee Roth is the living embodiment of the term “Rock Star.” The guy has never met a party he didn’t have fun at, and his live performances throughout the years carry his wild and free spirit. In this video clip from 1983’s US Festival, Diamond Dave tells a Van Halen fan that he’s going to sleep with his girlfriend, swigs a shot of Jack Daniels and then disses the Clash, all in the span of a few minutes.

WEEN
Besides their left-of-center writing style, Ween are also beloved for their comedic bent on pop music. But at a show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, Canada, singer Aaron Freeman aka Gene Ween crossed the line of absurdity by showing up to the gig drunk as a skunk. How bad was he? Well, the rest of Ween left the stage disgusted and only after a few solo songs did Freeman even realize they had exited stage left.

AMY WINEHOUSE
How bad was Amy Winehouse’s 2011 performance in Serbia, well, it actually made the mainstream news circuit. The late singer slurred her way through the set list and was booed by the capacity crowd throughout the 70-minute show. It’s one of many sad stories related to the ‘Rehab’ singer’s short yet promising life and career.

Ah, the excesses of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. Alcohol and rock have a long history together, creating some of the genre’s most infamous moments. After party stories are of legend and we still don’t even know a great deal about what went on every night when the bands got off stage. That’s not what we’re here to talk about though.

This list is going to take you through 15 Rock Stars Drunk On Stage. That’s right, they just couldn’t wait for the party not even two hours after their set and showed up to work hammered. To say these rock stars were merely half-in-the-bag would be a gross understatement. It’s one thing to have a few drinks before going on stage and another to drink your entire tour rider’s worth of booze before you’ve even performed. We’ve found some videos that capture the moment that these musicians undoubtedly don’t remember.

SLASH
Guns N’ Roses were one of the hardest partying bands on the circuit back in the day, and with an album called ‘Appetite for Destruction,’ alcohol was one of the key ingredients to the volatile recipe. The band saw one of the quickest rises to musical world domination ever and they bathed in the excesses of stardom. Here, Slash is clearly sauced as he tells the crowd he needs to change his clothes because his pants because they ripped and his unmentionables were hanging out. In his boxer shorts, he exclaims that he’s “not Angus Young here, okay?”

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG
Everyone is probably familiar with Green Day’s 2012 performance at the I Heart Radio Music Festival. The band got their set time cut short in order for R&B star Usher to have more time and this did not sit well with mainman Billie Joe Armstrong. He stops the song they’re playing, exclaiming that he wants to play a new song because they only have one minute left. He also rants about Justin Bieber and smashes his guitar in protest. The incident was followed by a lengthy stint in rehab by Armstrong, who seems to have turned his life around positively since then.

SCOTT WEILAND
Scott Weiland has a noted history of drug and alcohol abuse. At this Texas show, he opens up with a rant telling the crowd that he stopped doing dope, to which there’s an applause. He calms them down, explaining that he started drinking again, to which there’s an even greater applause. Slurring his speech, he attributes his alcoholism to the death of his brother and getting divorced from his wife, but vows to start taking care of himself and thinks that Stone Temple Pilots should start playing a lot of shows.

LARS ULRICH
When Metallica hit one of their peaks, they were an unstoppable force on stage, but were sometimes hindered. Yes, this means booze. James Hetfield would notoriously throw cups of beer into the crowd as he carried on with the show, drunk as the dickens. This time, it was Lars Ulrich’s turn to front the band. He swapped places with Hetfield and ran around on stage singing the Diamond Head cover ‘Am I Evil.’ Surprisingly, Lars sounds pretty damn good singing this as he gave the crowd an unforgettable moment.

KURT COBAINAt a show in Rotterdam in 1991, an incredibly wasted Nirvana took the stage and gradually became more and more intoxicated towards the end of the set. The result was something akin to what any inexperienced local band does at their first show. Kurt Cobain attempts to start ‘In Bloom,’ but throws his hands up in the air because he has no idea what is going on with the sound. After about a minute and a half, things are sorted out and the band is back in business.
